"Likay" is a local dialect which means "avoiding or running away from something". The beach is named as it is because years back, when typhoons frequently hit the town, the sea is murky with its coast lined with the storm's remnants. Despite this, people take a swim while effortfully avoiding the twigs, leaves and other kinds of dirt. Therefore, locals who take a dip here would have to watch out for some UFOs (unidentified floating objects).

The beach is located near the heart of the city "Tunga-Tunga", just behind the Maasin Central School and the City Hall. It is the beach that lines along the Espina Boulevard. At present, the beach is clean and well-maintained by the authorities and people come here often because it is FREE. Ergo, there's no entrance fee or corkage; and people just have to bring their food and tables, chairs with their umbrellas while looking for a spot on a "first come, first served" basis. It was Easter Sunday when I with my family went there, so as expected, the beach was jam-packed. There were men and women swimming, some sunbathing or picture-taking, and some kids on the shore building sand castles, running after the waves or diving for it.

PLAZA INDEPENDENCIA

The Plaza Independencia is locally famous for its "dating" scenes. (Fact is, a lot of couples spend their "quality time" here) Why? Maybe because of its serenity or the breathe of fresh sea air as it is located near the port or maybe because of its strategic location as it is just a few blocks away from metro Cebu and the Sto. Nino Cathedral. Apart from having no entrance fee, the plaza has been newly renovated (when I went there) with more light posts, and wider space for strolling, jogging, biking, or parking. There's also a gazebo with medium-sized platform (I thought of this as a stage, strategic for holding a zumba exercise class. haha!)

Despite its remodeling into a modern kind of plaza, its role in history remains the same. What most people don't know is that this plaza has witnessed historical events since its establishment as a Plaza in the early1600's. That time, it was known as Plaza de Armas. Read here for more information)

MONTE CUEVA DE LA VIRGEN

Location: Rizal, Maasin City, Southern Leyte

How to commute: ride a tricycle, about 10-15 minutes from the terminal to this signage

cost: 8-10pesos only (as of April 2012)

Also known as the Shrine of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus and Our Lady of Assumption, this is a famous spot especially on Holy Week and on the Blessed Virgin Mary's birthday on September 8. Quite famous for pilgrims, this climb of more than 500 steps upward is accentuated with the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Exhausting as it may seem, the journey uphill becomes rewarding enough once you reach the top and be welcomed by the awesome mouth of the cave. Masses are held there on schedule and on special occasions.
